How Often Should You Post On Your Blog?

I frequently see bloggers wondering how often they should post new content on their blog. Is it better to post a few times a week? After all, wouldn't more content mean there's more opportunity to be found? Or should you blog less often but focus on making each post totally amazing and have more time to spend promoting and networking?

These are all great questions! As usual, there's no one-size-fits-absolutely-everyone answer, but I want to share my thoughts and experience.

First, I think it's important to understand your overall monetization strategy for your blog. That just means think about HOW you actually plan to make money and where your income will come from. My own strategy has never relied much on pageviews to generate income, since I focus primarily on my e-mail list. Therefore, if a less frequent posting schedule results in less pageviews, that's totally fine.

If you also plan to focus primarily on your e-mail list, then I think posting once per week is ideal for most people. If you happen to have plenty of focused time available to create 2-3 quality posts per week and still keep up with all the rest of your blogging tasks, then by all means do it! However, most of just don't have that kind of time.

It's far better to have one amazing post that everyone loves, can't wait to share and can't wait to come back for more than 3-4 mediocre posts. Also, this will give you time to give each post the attention it deserves. Spend lots of time on creating a compelling headline and excellent post graphics to go along with your wonderful content.

Also, you'll need some time to adequately promote each post, to write your e-mail newsletter, to network with other bloggers, create your own products, and more! It's hard to find that time if you're always working on posts.

I grew my blog from nothing to over 400k pageviews/month and a full time income by posting once per week. It works!

Also, consistency is so important. It's better to plan to post once per week and actually do it that try to post 3-4 times a week and only make it happen half the time. When you do have extra time, energy, and inspiration, go ahead and work ahead. Get your posts scheduled out ahead of time.
