Holiday decor. Since you’re here and reading this, I’m gonna guess that you have a love-hate relationship with all the tinsel, ornaments, blow up yard figures and lights – ALL the lights – that make Christmas so magical and the closet under the stairs so musty.
If you’re preparing to take down the Christmas tree and wondering how everything is going to fit back into the broken storage tubs, then you’re in the right place. Here are 6 quick tips on how to store your holiday decorations.
Tip 1: Use Batting to Prevent Broken Ornaments
My friend Lisa at Organize365 had this idea, and I think it’s genius! Instead of trying to nestle ornaments between bits of paper towel or tissue paper, you can use quilt batting in between layers of ornaments to keep them from breaking. And, the batting is something you’ll be able to use year after year. The paper towels? Not so much.
Tip 2: Inventory Your Stash
Natalie at Refined Rooms uses a clever app called Sortly to easily inventory all of her holiday decor. The awesome thing about this app? It will generate a QR code label you can stick on the outside of the storage tub. Just scan the label and you know exactly what’s in the box!
Tip 3: Upcycle Your Stockings – no, your other stockings
Have Christmas candles that are in danger of getting chipped or damaged? Use your stockings to snuggly wrap each candle before placing them in storage.
Tip 4: Don’t Store What You Don’t Use
This may seem like a no brainer, but if you’re having to move decor – that wasn’t ever taken out this season – out of the way so you can put away the decor you did use, it might be time to downsize. Only store the pieces that you love and use year after year.
Tip 5: Reuse the Same Decor All Year Long
I’m not sure how I didn’t think of this, but Celeste from Decor by the Seashore points out that you can use versatile pieces and simply change out the theming. She uses a burlap wreath all year long but decorates it with cute little accessories based on the season.
Tip 6: Feeling hopelessly lost? Follow this quick and easy process.
If you have so much holiday decor you don’t know where to start, I’d highly recommend Abby’s five-step process for sorting, purging, organizing, and storing holiday decor. She even includes some free printables!
Holiday decorating really brings the season to life, and storing it doesn’t have to cause stress! Hopefully, these tips will help you maximize your storage space so you can spend more time enjoying the season and less time worrying about how it will all fit back in the proper boxes.
