Have you ever dreamed of living in one of those tiny homes that make small space organization look like a breeze? It sure looks beautiful and innovative on television, but your small kitchen may not look quite so stunning and the budget for those HGTV tiny houses is surprisingly high.

Small Space Organization Tip #1: Declutter
The first rule of organizing is always to declutter! This step is even more critical when you are working with limited space. You know that cabinet that won’t quite shut because there are too many appliances shoved haphazardly on top of each other? No matter how much you shift and shuffle, if there’s not room, you can’t make it fit. Small space organization starts with going through your things with intention and discernment and deciding what you actually need and love.
Small Space Organization Tip #2: Use Hooks
Once you’ve removed any unnecessary items from your space, you may still have more items than will ever fit…or so it seems. Take a look at the walls in the area you’re trying to organize and see if you can utilize hooks or other wall storage. Hooks aren’t just for coats and backpacks – they’re also great for pots & pans, oven mitts, step stools, dust pans, and a whole host of kitchen utensils (There are a lot of ideas for how to utilize hooks in this post on how to organize a small kitchen!) Command hooks are my favorite since they don’t require any tools, can hold up to 12 lbs, don’t make holes in the walls, and they’re extremely easy to remove!
Small Space Organization Tip #3: Don’t forget to check the back door!
Whoever invented over-the-door organizers should be crowned a small space organization genius! The two most common organizers are shoe holders and towel hooks – but they can be used for soooo many other purposes!
Use shoe holders to organize…..
- Cleaning supplies
- Socks and Underwear (great in a small closet!)
- Pantry Items (great for seasoning packets!)
- Shoes…sometimes the traditional route is the best route!
Try hanging these items on towel hooks…..
- Coats and Jackets
- Small throw blankets
Small Space Organization Tip #4: Take Advantage of Under the Bed Space
Were you ever guilty of shoving things under the bed as a child when you were told to clean your room? Well now may be the time to embrace that inner child and start sticking things under your bed – in an organized manner of course! Don’t use under bed storage as a catch all because that’ll just lead to chaos and confusion. Instead, purchase containers that are specifically made for under the bed storage (ones with wheels are the best to keep them easily accessible!) and fill them with items that aren’t accessed as frequently.
Small Space Organization Tip #5: Use All Your Vertical Space
When you’re facing some small square footage that you need to organize, don’t forget that you have vertical space to work with! There are a lot of ready-to-assemble tools you can get to help you out here: bookshelves, bathroom vanities (especially ones designed to go over the toilet!), floating shelves and baskets, and even peg boards can be of use here.
A few keys to keep in mind when making a purchase….
- Get the tallest that will fit – that way you maximize your storage!
- If it won’t be screwed into the wall look out for top-heaviness.
- Make sure it will be functional and not just beautiful – a lot of floating shelves don’t support much weight or bulk!
Small Space Organization Tip #6: Use the Tops of Cabinets and Refrigerators
Another place to find some unexpected storage space is on top of cabinets or refrigerators. Now I would advise caution because getting to these out of the way spaces can be difficult, but they’re great for storing some lesser used items. I personally love putting decorative pieces like cake plates and serving platters in these spaces. I don’t use them often so I’m not constantly annoyed by having to pull out a step stool to access them, and (especially if you add a little greenery!) they make great decorations as well!
Small Space Organization Tips #7: Use Furniture that Doubles as Storage
Functional furniture is a great way to hide your belongings in plain sight. If you’re tight on space think about investing in a storage ottoman, a bed frame with built in drawers, or a decorative chest. These storage solutions can be a little less budget friendly, but you’re not only getting maximized storage space, you’re also decorating your space with cute new furnishings!
